Zhao Lu Si will direct the drama «Farewell Letter» (告别信) and play its lead role.

On September 16, Youku's 2027 series lineup was announced at a Youku conference, and the announcement of «Farewell Letter» served as official confirmation of earlier reports. The series will comprise 10 45-minute episodes. Filming is expected to begin in Chengdu in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Zhao Lu Si will both direct and star in the lead role. This will be her directorial debut. She will also become the first actress from the post-1995 generation to take on directing duties. Rumors currently name Cheng Lei as the likely male lead, but that remains categorically unconfirmed.

«Farewell Letter» is an adaptation of the novel «Für jede Lösung ein Problem» (十三封自杀告别信) by German writer Kerstin Gier. It is a rom-com in the black-comedy genre. The protagonist is a 30-year-old single woman. She makes a living writing pulp novels. Her family considers her a failure and a disgrace, her boyfriend marries her best friend, and her publisher cancels her contract. In despair, she decides to kill herself. But before she goes through with it, she sends 13 scathing and candid farewell letters to everyone who has ruined her life. At the very last moment, a ridiculous accident thwarts her plan, and her life begins to turn from tragedy into black comedy.

The screen rights were acquired by Zhao Lu Si's studio, which is also investing as a co-producer. Executive producers are Zhang Junbo and Zhou Zhaozhong; head writers are Zhao Tianyou and Zhang Yaming; and the production team is Youku Youxiang Studio, which worked on the series «Hidden Love».

In effect, Zhao Lu Si is building an interesting full-cycle production company and depends on no one but Youku itself as a streaming platform.

Recently, Zhao Lu Si's Studio held an original screenplay competition and then announced it had acquired adaptation rights to nine projects.
