On April 13, 2026, the creators of the series "Eight Hundred" (800 Meters, 方圆八百米) officially announced its premiere date. The 20-episode dorama will be released on April 17, 2026, on Tencent Video as part of the platform’s specialized “X Theatre” lineup, which focuses on short, high-intensity dramas.

The story takes place in the late 1990s in the fictional mining town of Fengyang. The local community lives by unwritten rules, and the geographic isolation of the area (within an 800‑meter radius) becomes a metaphor for the boundary between humanity and cruelty.

A charred female body is discovered in the town. The investigation, led by local police officer Chen Hong Bin (played by Ding Yong Dai), gradually uncovers a series of crimes, including unsolved cases from past years linked to a mining accident. The main suspect turns out to be the investigator’s own son, Chen Hui (Xu Kai).

For Xu Kai, this is his first time playing a negative character – a criminal. In fact, he can be described as the antagonist to the protagonist Chen Hong Bin, who is trying to solve the crimes.

Chen Hui is driven by two motives: paying for his girlfriend’s medical treatment and avenging his mother’s death. The girlfriend, Gao Song Ge, who suffers from a serious illness, is played by Deng En Xi. Chinese media call him «越界者» – “the one who crosses the line.” His actions are not fueled by malice but by a desire to protect those close to him. He commits crimes out of love for his sick girlfriend and revenge for his mother. Step by step, he sinks into increasingly serious offenses, losing the very line that once separated him from those he despised. This makes him not a cartoonish villain, but a tragic figure.

The dorama’s creators also promise that this will not be a typical suspense series, but rather a story focused on the characters’ fates. The show will explore complex relationships: conflicts between father and son, duty and family, law and human nature.

The series shifts the focus from “finding the killer” to “experiencing the choices.” The detective plot itself is merely the outer shell. The real dramatic tension arises from the characters’ decisions at key moments. Who decides to hide the truth, who decides to reveal it, and who continues down the wrong path – these are the true driving forces of the story.

In the end, what matters most is not who wins, but what each participant loses along the way. Chen Hui loses control over his boundaries, while Chen Hong Bin loses the ability to assess the situation clearly.

Ultimately, this is a dorama about paying the price for consequences. The plot does not tell viewers how to choose, but it makes it painfully clear that once you start down certain paths, there is no turning back.

Filming took place in Fengcheng, Jiangxi Province, on the site of a real mining town. The creators used authentic locations – old workshops, coal waste heaps, residential barracks – to achieve a visually authentic 1990s atmosphere. The promotional campaign for the series incorporates “survival rules” – a list of prohibitions for the town’s residents, including, for example, a ban on drinking beverages of unknown origin.
