On June 16, screenwriter Meng Qiqi issued an apology to actress Bai Lu.

Earlier, Meng Qiqi had accused the actress of unilaterally replacing the entire 11‑member writing team that had spent a year working on the script for «The First Jasmine» (Mo Li, 莫离, Неразлучные) – a move that reportedly helped the project secure a top “S‑level” rating on the Tencent platform. According to Meng, the upheaval happened because Bai Lu wanted “her own” screenwriter.

Yesterday, Meng Qiqi posted a statement on her Weibo account, which read:

“Today I would like to clarify the situation and offer my apologies to Ms. Bai Lu regarding the screenwriter change for the drama «The First Jasmine». Due to the lingering effects of the earlier incident involving the series «Untouchable Lovers» (凤囚凰) and issues connected to the process of lead‑role handovers, I initially believed that the writer change was related to Ms. Bai Lu. However, after verification from multiple sources, it has been confirmed that this is indeed unrelated to Ms. Bai Lu. I therefore sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to Ms. Bai Lu. I hope all netizens will stay rational and neither believe nor spread rumours.

Meng Qiqi is referring to the 2018 drama «Untouchable Lovers», in which Bai Lu played a supporting role. That incident left her with a lasting impression that Bai Lu could influence scripts and secure “extra” roles. In that series, Bai Lu took on two characters simultaneously, and her screen time far exceeded what had originally been planned (compared with the source novel and earlier announcements). This sparked a wave of criticism from fans and viewers: the actress was accused of “adding scenes for herself” («加戏» – jiā xì) thanks to connections with producers or directors. No official proof of any backroom deal ever emerged, but the case long cemented Bai Lu’s reputation as an actress supposedly able to obtain script changes in her favour.

The apology therefore appears ambiguous, leaving room for different interpretations. One reading is that Meng Qiqi admits her prejudice from that earlier case coloured her judgement in this instance, and she now acknowledges her mistake and repents. Another is that the text contains a subtle hint that Bai Lu does, in fact, know how to negotiate.

On June 12, 2026, the Beijing Xingquan Law Firm, acting on behalf of Bai Lu, publicly announced that it had initiated defamation proceedings.

The actress’s studio issued a statement declaring that information such as “falsification of academic credentials, falsification of payment orders and illegal acquisition of actor status”, “romantic relationships”, “demand for replacement of the writing team” and “close ties with relevant employees of Jiangsu Cultural Investment Group” is defamatory and will be pursued through legal channels.
